Following the completion of the children’s Prathamā examination in March 2023, we relocated to Śṛṅgerī, Karnataka, to sustain their immersive Sanskrit education. Their Prathamā teacher, Śrī Anantha Krishna Mahodaya, had been appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Central Sanskrit University (CSU), Śṛṅgerī. Under his dedicated guidance, alongside other esteemed professors from the university, the children pursued a rigorous two-year Kāvya curriculum (10th-grade equivalent) from 2023 to 2025, administered by the Karnataka Samskrit University.

The Kāvya examination, conducted by the Directorate of Saṃskṛta Education under Karnāṭaka Saṃskṛta Viśvavidyālaya (KSU), represents the intermediate tier of structured language education. While the Prathama examination focuses on building basic sentence construction and basic Devanagari skills, the Kāvya curriculum transitions students from functional grammar to the rich tradition of classical Sanskrit literature (kāvya).

It is designed to cultivate both a deeper aesthetic appreciation and an advanced analytical command of the language.

What the Kāvya Syllabus Entails

The curriculum is structured across specific focus areas that bridge intermediate grammar with core literary analysis:

• Introduction to Classical Literature (Kāvya-Paricaya): Initial immersion into the structural genres of Sanskrit literature, focusing on poetry (padya), artistic prose (gadya), and mixed composition (campū).
• Textual Study of Epics & Classics: Detailed reading of designated segments from classical epics—such as Kālidāsa’s Raghuvaṃśam or Kumārasambhavam—requiring word-by-word splitting (pada-ccheda), grammatical parsing (anvaya), and comprehensive commentary integration.
• Advanced Grammar (Vyākaraṇa): A deeper dive into Paninian rules building directly upon foundational knowledge, featuring intermediate letter-combinations (sandhi), more complex compounding structures (samāsa), nominal declensions (śabda-rūpa), and a wider matrix of verb conjugations (dhātu-rūpa).
• Introduction to Poetics & Figures of Speech (Alaṅkāra): Basic exposure to structural literary devices, enabling students to identify standard structural figures of speech like Upamā (simile) and Anuprāsa (alliteration).
• Comprehension & Creative Composition: Advanced translation capabilities, short paragraph drafting directly in the Devanagari script, and parsing unfamiliarly presented classical verses.

The Academic Pathway

Passing the Kāvya milestone bridges the fundamental metrics of language learning and serves as the primary prerequisite for entering the final level of the university's college-level tier: Sāhitya (which is equivalent to 12th grade).
