Karnataka Samskrit University: Prathamā (2022 - 23)
Prathamā
Date: March 2022 - 2023
Age: 10 years old
Location: Mattur, Shivamogga
Following the completion of the children's Bālabodha exam in March 2022, inspired by their eagerness for systematic, immersive Sanskrit learning, we relocated to Mattur village in Karnataka. Under the guidance of Śrī Anantha Krishna mahodaya (presently an Assistant Professor at Central Sanskrit University, Śṛṅgerī), they prepared for the 'Prathamā' examination (the 7th-grade equivalent) conducted by Karnataka Samskrit University.
What the Prathamā Syllabus Entails
The curriculum acts as a gateway for absolute beginners or young students, focusing heavily on building core linguistic skills, proper phonetic pronunciation, and structural clarity. The syllabus encompasses the following core areas:
- Introduction to Devanagari Script: Foundational guidance on reading and writing characters accurately, mastering the distinct phonetics of svara (vowels) and vyañjana (consonants).
- Basic Vyākaraṇa (Grammar): Introduction to structural rules, including primary sandhi (letter combinations), essential samāsa (compounding structures), and fundamental dhātu-rūpa (verb conjugations) alongside nominal declensions.
- Vocabulary Building & Sentence Formation: Accumulating basic vocabulary, learning common everyday phrases, and structuring simple active and passive sentences.
- Reading, Recitation & Pronunciation: Supervised reading of short narratives, basic texts, and ślokas. Special emphasis is placed on standard, accurate oral recitation techniques.
- Basic Translation Skills: Fundamental exercises translating direct sentences from Sanskrit into regional/modern languages and vice versa.
Completing the Prathamā standard clears the track for KSU's subsequent secondary milestones, namely the Kāvyā and Sāhity course levels.
