Since our main purpose for relocating to India was our children's traditional Sanskrit education, we decided to prepare them for an exam with a structured curriculum. We registered them for the Saṃskṛta-Bālabodha exam conducted by Bhāratīya-Vidyā-Bhavana, Mumbai. The children were trained by Śrīmān Chandan Mahodaya from August 2021 to February 2022.
The Saṃskṛta-Bālabodha exam, conducted under the Saral Saṃskṛta Parīkṣā framework by Bhāratīya-Vidyā-Bhavana (Mumbai), is the absolute first-level, foundational certification designed to popularize Sanskrit among young learners and absolute beginners.
The curriculum functions as a gentle, immersive gateway to the language, focusing on building early linguistic confidence through intuitive learning rather than heavy rote-memorization.
What the Bālabodha Syllabus Entails
The course is structured around a single question paper based on standard beginner text blocks, concentrating on the following core pillars:
- Introduction to the Alphabet: Familiarization with reading, identifying, and cleanly writing basic Devanagari script characters.
- Simple Sentence Construction: Building short, active, day-to-day conversational sentences (e.g., commands, simple descriptions, and simple queries).
- Basic Verb Forms (Kriyāpada): Practical introduction to high-frequency, introductory verb roots—such as paṭh (to read), likh (to write), khād (to eat), and gam (to go)—in their most basic present tense forms.
- Essential Vocabulary: Introducing foundational vocabulary, including common nouns (animals, family structures, objects) and elementary particles (avyayas) like atra (here) and tatra (there).
- Elementary Translation & Exercises: Simple bi-directional translation exercises between Sanskrit and regional or modern languages to cement syntax familiarity.
- Wisdom Sayings (Subhāṣitas): Memorization, reading, and understanding the basic moral meanings of short, classical verses of wisdom.
Clearing the Bālabodha milestone marks the completion of Level 1, directly qualifying a student to progress to Bhāratīya-Vidyā-Bhavana's subsequent progressive steps: Prārambha (Level 2) and Praveśa (Level 3).
