In this article we will describe various games one can play using the Sanskrit alphabet card set and Sanskrit Alphabet chart set to make learning fun and exciting. Refer to our article “How to teach Sanskrit (Devanagari) Alphabet” for the detailed lesson plan.
- Divide the group of students into two.
- Give each a set of shuffled alphabet cards.
- Start the game.
- Group which arranges the sequence first is the winner.
- Test: After the game ask each group to pronounce the letters in the sequence.
Using Alphabet charts: Give each student a varga (consonant row). They act like the teacher and show the letter with the pointer, pronounce the letter and other students pronounce after.
Using Alphabet cards: Give each student cards of a varga (consonant row) or cards from vowels. They act like the teacher and tell the letter, flip it and tell the word and its English meaning. Other students repeat after as they do in the normal class.
As students become expert at the alphabet, we can play them each five random cards from the entire alphabet rather than in the sequence.
Read the letter on the board – write a letter from the sequence (random consonant, vowel combination) ask the student to read – first the student should recognize the consonant and tell the sequence from beginning until that letter and then read the letter. Like for example if the teacher writes “टू”, student will tell “ट” and then tell the sequence until the letter: “ट” “टा” “टि” “टी” “टु” “टू” and then students will pronounce the letter correctly as: “टू”.
Until “varnamala” sequence is taught, one can play the same game with a random vowel or a random consonant.
